There a great many benefits to fish oil and just about everyone should be taking them.  As with everything beneficial, occasionally there are some side effects. Fish oils do have some rare side effects.

Omega 3 contains powerful essential fatty acids. It is the most beneficial form of the omegas, contains 2 fatty acids EPA and DHA, and they can only be found in fish oil.  These 2 fatty acids are essential to fight or prevent both physical and mental disease.  EFA’s are important in normal body functions including regulating pressure in the eye, joints and blood vessels, promoting healthy circulation, balancing the hormonal system, maintaining proper kidney function, preventing blood clots, just to name a few.

Not everyone can tolerate fish oils.  Allergic reactions have been reported, and it is not known if this is due to the fish oil itself, or the gelatin capsule they come in.  More serious contraindications may be excessive bleeding in people who may be taking blood thinners, and fish oil may not be advisable if severe high blood pressure is not under control (due to possibly increase risk of hemorrhagic stroke).

There is one specific drug that fish oil may interact with that needs to be considered.  Fish oil may promote anti-platelet action of aspirin or other NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen and Motrin.  Therefore the use of fish oil with aspirin may be harmful.

It has been reported in some cases that large doses of fish oil may suppress the immune system and consequently may not be advisable for people with suppressed immune systems.  A large dose in this case considers to be 3 grams per day or more.

No adverse reactions with pregnancy have been shown in humans.  However some studies in animals have reported an increase in the rate of prolonged difficult labors and an increase in blood loss during labor.

Some people have reported allergic reactions, mainly rashes. Another side effect is indigestion, especially if people have a problem with digesting fats.  Some other people have commonly reported burping when they take fish oil and a fishy odor on their skin.  I have heard of some rare occasions where fish oils have caused diarrhea and hypoglycemia.

The quality of the fish oil must be addressed. You should purchase your fish oil from a good quality manufacturer.  There have been some instances of mercury found in the fish oil that has not been screened for quality.  Mercury is a very toxic substance and should be avoided at all cost.  Taking a good quality Omega 3 fish oil will give the added benefits, free of side effects.

It is up to the individual to decide whether the potential risks out weigh the potential benefits of fish oil.  I believe Omega 3 fish oil is a critical nutrient that the majority of the US population will benefit from immensely.  Ultimately, the decision on whether to take Omega 3 fish oils is yours. Using fish oil should be an educated decision with caution as to what drugs you are taking. Talk to your physician if your are not sure whether you should be taking Omega 3 fish oil.

Omega 3 deficiency is the sixth biggest killer of Americans and more deadly than excess trans fat intake, according to a new study.

The Harvard University researchers looked at 12 dietary, lifestyle and metabolic risk factors such as tobacco smoking and high blood pressure and used a mathematical model to determine how many fatalities could have been prevented if better practices had been observed.

The study, jointly funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the Association of Schools of Public Health, drew on 2005 data from the US National Health Center for Health Statistics. They determined that there were 72,000-96,000 preventable deaths each year due to omega 3 deficiency, compared to 63,000-97,000 for high trans fat intake.

Power of diet

“This is a very interesting analysis,” said Andrew Shao, PhD, vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN).

“I think this analysis reinforces the long-held notion that the diet has a tremendously powerful impact on health and longevity and that the consumption of omega-3’s (along with fruits and veggies) by Americans is far from adequate.”

But he questioned the precision of the study findings due to complicating factors that had not been addressed.

“It is hard to say how definitive their findings are as far as the numbers are concerned, since chronic diseases and associated deaths are multifactorial,” he told NutraIngredients-USA.com this morning.

“As far as diet goes, is it the lack of fruits and veggies or the excess animal and processed foods that is the culprit? It is hard to say.”

He added that the study did not consider other key nutrients such as vitamin D.

Shao’s counterpart at the Natural Products Association, Dan Fabricant, PhD, emphasized the potential public health care savings that could be derived from better nutrition, especially in tight economic times, but called for further study.

“We need more clinical research that nails down why omega-3 is so effective,” Fabricant said. “This seems to be the last missing piece for omega-3s in terms of clarifying the picture for governmental/regulatory bodies of its efficacy.”

Market trends, consumer attitudes, GMP inspections, sports nutrition opportunities, European regulations, purchasing strategies, and much more is included in this free report… Click here

Shao added the study highlighted the importance of establishing a dietary reference intake (DRI) for omega-3 forms, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

“Once these requirements are established, the government can undertake initiatives to improved Americans’ intake of these critical nutrients,” he observed.

“But until that happens, Americans are likely to continue to fall short in their omega-3 intake, and we see a glimpse of what the consequence can be from this study.”

Shocking

The study will do no harm to the omega-3 industry, with the world’s leading supplier, Ocean Nutrition Canada, calling the results “shocking”.

“…this new study validates that Omega-3 EPA/DHA is more than just part of a healthy diet…it’s a matter of life and death,” said Ocean Nutrition Canada’s vice president of marketing and communications, Lori Covert.

“We know that daily doses of Omega-3 EPA/DHA can help with many conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, and we’re committed to increasing consumer awareness about the drastic Omega-3 EPA/DHA deficiency in the Western diet,” Covert said.

Tobacco smoking ranked as the highest risk factor with 436,000 to 500,000 attributed preventable deaths, followed by high blood pressure (372,000 to 414,000), obesity (188,000 to 237,000), physical inactivity (164,000 to 222,000), high blood glucose (163,000 to 217,000), high LDL cholesterol (94,000 to 124,000) and high salt intake (97,000 to 107,000).

The other risk factors were alcohol use; low polyunsaturated fatty acids; low fruits and vegetables intake and alcohol use.

Eat more fat. Could this be correct? We have been told for years not to eat fat. Everywhere you look you see fat-free, low fat or non-fat food products. Fat is very essential for us to live, i.e. providing adequate body metabolism and functioning at the cellular level. So you may ask, what are the fish oil benefits?

Did you know our brain is made up of approximately sixty- percent fat? There are good fats and bad fats. The required essential fatty acids cannot be manufactured by the body. They are critical for maintaining brain function, maintaining a strong immune system, and for maximum heart capacity. Good fats are essential to achieve proper brain maturation at one year of age through achieving optimal cognition as we age. These omegas are being studied in relation to Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease.

So which fats are good and which are undesirable? What are the fish oil benefits? What we want to achieve is a balance of essential fatty acids. There are Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids. Our ancestors had a diet, which consisted of a ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 at 1:1. Today, our American diet ratio approximates a ratio of 30:1. Omega 6 oils are found in animal fats, warm weather vegetable oils, and processed foods. Omega-3 fatty acids or the “good” fatty acids are found in cold water fish, flaxseed, almonds, and pumpkin. The beneficial fatty acids are in the form of DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid).

Some individuals have an inherent defect in converting their EPA’s into DHA. These people must take DHA directly. Otherwise they will not get the benefit of essential fatty acids.

If too much of the Omega-6 fatty acids are ingested, this can put the body in a pro-inflammatory state. Foods such as animal meat, squid, eggs and milk may promote this. Many of our arthritides are self-induced by our own diets. Fish oil benefits this and symptoms can be reduced or progression significantly retarded with modifications in our macro and micronutrient intake.

Omega 3’s have an important effect on the brain blood flow, immune system and neurotransmitter system. This is because every cell of our body has a lipid bi-layer surrounding it. We want to have a fluid membrane that is flexible. We see disease presentations when it becomes rigid. Contributors are those foods that contain trans-fatty acids or state partially hydrogenated on them. ( Beware!) Some interesting studies have shown a correlation of these fatty acids with such diseases as depression, multiple sclerosis, PMS related mood changes, schizophrenia, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and other neurological conditions.

You may have a fatty acid deficiency if you have any of the following symptoms: dry skin, dandruff, frequent urination irritability, soft nails, allergies, weakness, fatigue or poor wound healing to name a few. Fish oil benefits all of these.

It is important to take a good antioxidant when taking fatty acids. They can become rancid in the body, causing a condition called lipid peroxidation which forms free radicals. (Do not take an excess of antioxidants however-these can become free radicals themselves.)

Also all fatty acids (even with the same name) are not created equal. The source of the origin must be known. Some fish have high mercury content. Therefore ingestion of a product of unknown reputation is to travel on unchartered waters! The fish oil benefits may then be compromised.

After years of searching for a reputable fish oil, I found a lab that would manufacture what I like to believe is the best on the market. That is why I developed a product to my own specifications. It is EPA/DHA in the proper ratios to give the most powerful results. I have recommended this to my patients with great success. I have seen clinical results with decreasing the pain and inflammation with arthritis, improving blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, deleting the side effects of certain drugs, and improving memory and cognitive functions.

Do not let your essential fatty acids become exposed to prolonged air, light, or heat. Keep in a cool dark area. I recommend to my patients to keep them in the refrigerator. Otherwise you will be ingesting rancid fats. The fish oil benefits will not be seen as a result.

The first step is to determine if you have a deficiency or an imbalance of the above ratios. Not only can signs and symptoms be showing up in your body, but also there are specific lab tests that can be performed to determine if you are deficient in a particular fatty acid. Once a particular fatty acid is found to be deficient, dietary changes and/or supplementation may be necessary for optimum brain function. So to make certain you take advantage of all the fish oil benefits, take a good quality supplement.

You are about to learn how to stop wanting to feel good and healthy, and how to start enjoying a natural state of healthy living that most people will never know. Sadly, most of us even in highly developed countries are duped into believing that it is just a natural part of growing older to experience suffering from things like painful arthritis, dangerously high cholesterol, stiff and sore joints, or even life threatening heart problems. There are a variety of toxins in our diet and environment. Even our lifestyle can wear us down and begin to tear us apart from the inside out.

Here is the good news.

Cutting edge supplements like Omega 3 fish oil works to help your body repair itself and curb the damage.

What makes Fish Oil work and why is it so powerful?

Fish oil contains the essential fat Omega 3, a special form containing two beneficial fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which can only be found in fish oil. These two fatty acids are essential to fighting or preventing both physical and mental disease.

EFA’s (essential fatty acids) are heavily involved in vital body functions including:

  • Colon function
  • Regulating pressure in the eye, joints, and blood vessels, and mediating immune response.
  • Regulating bodily secretions and their viscosity.
  • Dilating and constricting blood vessels.
  • Regulating collateral circulation.
  • Directing Endocrine hormones to their target cells.
  • Regulating smooth muscles and autonomic reflexes.
  • Being primary constituents of cell membranes.
  • Regulating the rate of cell division.
  • Maintaining the fluidity and rigidity of cellular membranes
  • Regulating inflow and outflow of substances to and from cells
  • Transporting oxygen from red blood cells to the tissues
  • Maintaining proper kidney function and fluid balance
  • Keeping saturated fats mobile in the blood stream
  • Preventing blood cells from clumping together( blood clots can be a cause of a heart attack and stroke)
  • Mediating the release of inflammatory substance from cells that may trigger allergic conditions
  • Regulating nerve transmission and communication

Clinical studies have indicated that if your diet is deficient in Omega 6 or Omega 3 over the long term, degenerative illness will result. That is the grim reality that most people will experience without the aid of supplemental Fish Oil. But not you.

After over twenty years of treating patients and countless hours of supplemental research, I have designed a specific Omega 3 Fish oil with you in mind.

It is never too late to help your body prevent disease later on in life. By taking the necessary precautions now, you can assure a healthier pain-free life in your later years.

Omega 3 fish oils help you maintain a healthy nervous system. Essential fatty acids (Omega 3’s) are important in nerve transmission. During the normal aging process, the nerves gradually degenerate causing diseases to occur.

Taking the proper omega 3 fish oils helps prevent inflammation. You have probably witnessed this or you may have a friend who says that when they bump into something, evenly slightly, it causes them a lot of pain. In an average person, it would not hurt at all. This is usually due to an essential fatty acid deficiency. The essential fatty acids coat the nerves and protect them.

You may see this in your mother, father, or grandparents who are always complaining that they are in pain. This is because their essential fatty acids levels have become compromised. Therefore, it is essential to assure a pain free life and a proper functioning nervous system to have the proper essential fatty acids, which omega 3 fish oils promote.

Essential fatty acids are a large part of the brain as well, so taking omega 3’s now may prevent the degenerative diseases of dementia, Alzheimer’s etc.

Fish oils help to regulate collateral circulation. You may have a relative who at one time had underwent surgery for vein stripping or you may have an uncle who has a blocked artery. You can prevent this, omega 3’s help our circulatory system function better. Let us say your arteries were clogged around your heart, this will cause some of your heart muscle to die. Your body tries to control this by making new blood vessels around the areas that were choked off, this is what’s known as collateral circulation.

Essential fatty acids promote this circulation. They also are essential in keeping your arteries clear, so the blood can flow cleanly. Omega 3’s also promote the proper constriction and relaxation of blood vessels, so if this is functioning properly, it makes your heart work more efficiently. If your blood vessels are clogged, your heart has to work that much harder. So taking the proper fish oils helps to promote to a proper functioning circulatory system.

Omega 3 fish oils promote the healthy endocrine system, which is responsible for the hormones. Essential fatty acids help direct these hormones to the proper target. If these hormones do not reach the proper target cells, that may result in some female disorders such as PMS, menopause, difficult periods or testosterone problems. Taking the proper omega 3 fish oil helps in the healthy functioning hormonal system. This includes the thyroid gland. We all know somebody who has a thyroid problem, which can affect almost every other system in the body.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are also responsible for bringing oxygen from the red blood cells to the tissues of the body. Transporting oxygen from the red blood cells to all the tissues in the body is a major function of Omega 3 essential fatty acids. It goes without saying how important it is to get oxygen to all parts of the body.

Fish oils are important in maintaining proper kidney function and fluid balance. You have all seen someone who has swollen ankles or legs. This is a result of essential fatty acid deficiency. When the kidney is not functioning properly, it also affects your blood pressure. Therefore, to help maintain normal blood pressure, it is essential to have the proper Omega 3 balance.

If you take a look around and see rampant these degenerative diseases, whether it be one of your friends or relatives, they are not very healthy. You can prevent this. It is possible to prevent the above-mentioned diseases by maintaining the proper balance of Omega 3 essential fatty acids with fish oil.

It is never too late to start letting your body heal. Like when it has a virus or disease. As we go through life our systems slowly break down, so we should do all we can to prevent this by taking the proper nutrients, which include Omega 3, fish oils. So start protecting yourself today, to prevent pain and disease tomorrow.

Fish oils help prevent heart attacks. They also prevent a second heart attack from occurring. One study evaluated the effect of dietary intervention of over two thousand men recovering from heart attacks. At the end of two years, the group that was given fish oil was found to increase there fish oil intake four times as much as the other subjects in the study. The group that took fish oils experienced a significantly lower mortality. The group that took the fish oils had a 29% reduction of risk of death compared with the other groups.

Even in patients with no apparent clinical evidence of arterial disease, fish consumption has been show to improve the arteries.

Fish oil or essential fatty acid deficiency also contributes to some severe degenerative inflammatory condition such as Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. I sure you have seen people whose hands or feet are all deformed from arthritis and they are in severe pain. This person finds it hard to even move around. This can be prevented if the proper essential fatty acids, mainly Omega 3 fish oils, would have been taken.

Clinical studies in women have shown a decreased risk of rheumatoid arthritis in those who have consumed fish oils. A double blind, placebo controlled study of rheumatoid arthritis patients given 1.8 grams per day of fish showed less morning stiffness and tender joints. There are many studies that show the benefit of fish oils with rheumatoid arthritis. The main result being less tenderness and swelling of joints.

Fish oil is also important for proper kidney function. If the kidneys begin to malfunction, many times the person will have to go on dialysis. If any of you know somebody who has been on dialysis, it is a disturbing site. Fish oils have been known to lower serum triglyceride levels in people with kidney disease and they have shown to be clinically beneficial. So taking the proper fish oil helps to maintain the proper kidney function, which may prevent some of the other above diseases.

We all know somebody who has heart disease or high cholesterol. Clogged arteries are a slowly degenerative disease that can be prevented with the proper amount of fish oils. Due to the foods that we consume, it is like chocking off the blood supply to the rest of the body or getting the pipes rusted. Fish oils help to maintain normal functioning arteries that can promote healthy blood flow to all parts of the body

Fish oils also promote healthy colon function. Several studies with inflammatory bowel disease show an improvement after taking fish oils. High levels of inflammation have been shown in patient’s colon and in the stools of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The formation of these inflammatory compounds can be deceased by reducing or eliminating meat, red meat, and dairy, while increasing the amount of omega 3 fish oils in there diet. Inflammation in the bowel is very painful, it even sounds painful.

One of the most important secrets that most doctors do not even know is that fish oils helps prevent blood cells from clumping together. Blood clots cause heart attacks and stokes. Taking omega 3 fish oils now helps to prevent heart attack and strokes. If you are or a loved one has had a heart attack or stroke, you know how devastating it can be. These diseases can be prevented. Having a heart attack is a very painful occurrence not only for you but also for your loved ones. By promoting a healthy circulatory system, these diseases can be prevented.

There is a large body of evidence that now documents the beneficial effects of fish oil consumption. The Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are the components of fish oil responsible for its preventative and therapeutic effects. These include helping to lower blood pressure, improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels, preventing strokes, decreasing the risk of heart attacks and arteriosclerosis.

The main benefit of fish oil is to decrease production of prostaglandin E2 that is responsible for inflammation.

As you can see from the above, most of these conditions are of an inflammatory nature, so eating the proper diet and taking Omega 3 fish oils are crucial for maintaining good health and preventing disease in the future.

My name is Dr. Gary L. Gendron. I am the owner of the Integrated Medical Centre of Bonita Springs. I know that when you go to most companies websites they start off saying “We have been in business for over a million years”, followed by “our products or services are the best” and that their websites are designed as advertisements rather than sources of information to help you make informed decisions. I want you to know that what follows is just the opposite. My goal is to give you the tools to educate yourself about Omega 3 Fish Oil to the level that you want to know so that you can make educated decisions.

Questions, Concerns and Fears

I know that you may have many questions, concerns and even fears regarding Fish Oil supplements.

Your questions many include:

How long will it take to work?

Normally you can expect to see and feel results in about 2-3 weeks. Many patients feel results almost immediately, however every case is different. It depends on the severity of the condition, how long it has been there and the type of problem being treated. I have seen some significant improvement in patients cholesterol levels, blood pressure and reduction in the pain and inflammation from arthritis.

How much will it cost?

That depends on how long you would like to feel great. A bottle of Omega 3 Fish oil is only $24.99. This will typically last one month. How long you need additional help is entirely up to you. If you have a chronic problem, you may need a few bottles. Many patients find that it works so well they enjoy taking it and want to keep feeling good. We do not produce Omega 3 fatty acids in our body, so we need to obtain it from our diet. Most people do not consume enough fish to obtain the required amount. With today’s fish breeding techniques, the amount of beneficial omega 3’s is being drastically reduced.

Your concerns may include:

Is this product safe?

Yes, we follow strict GMP and FDA guidelines.
We adhere to the following processes each and every day to assure our customer’s receives the quality products they deserve.
Vendor Audits – Prospective raw material suppliers are validated and visited , inspected to ensure their conformance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), equitable labor policies, and environmental responsibility.

Your fears may include:

Does Dr. G’s Omega 3 Fish oil work?

Yes, Dr. Gendron has over 23 years of clinical experience. This formulation is a result of his expertise and clinical experience throughout the years. It has been prescribed with amazing results with many of his patients.

Does you product contain PCB’s?

No, we have strict raw material specifications. All incoming ingredients conform to pharmaceutical standards of purity and effectiveness and meet or exceed the strict Federal requirements of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA).

What You Need To Know

In our industry there are many good people and a few bad ones. What you need to know is how to tell the good people from the bad people. For example, is the company reputable? Some websites sell you products and they have no experience with supplements or nutrition. Some companies sell inferior products, many do not put in the bottle what it states outside the bottle. Recent studies reveal as many as 8 out of 10 products do not contain the ingredients as stated on the label.

What the Other Guy Isn’t Telling You

You need to be aware that some of the low cost products on the market that lack potency, don’t have the ingredients in the bottle that is on the label and that companies who sell them tend to close their doors voiding their warrantee offers and they reopen again under a new name. Many offer “free” products in order to get you to buy more or supplements you don’t need.

We Offer

Quality nutrition and healthcare products such as liver detoxification supplements, Weight loss supplements, joint formulas and powerful enzymes for fighting inflammation and customized nutritional programs. Our goal is to help you reach your optimum health goals and at the lowest cost to you. Whether you would just prefer to obtain relief from a condition or you would like to strive to be in the best health you can be. We offer this at a reasonable price and proven success as we have been in business for over 23 years. There are several resources available and a list of my latest articles to the left of this post.

I started giving my 55lb dog a 1200mg human supplement per day with total omega 3 fatty acids of 720mg.
Dermaquin (for dogs) suggests three 250mg per day for a 40-60lb weight.
Question is, can my dog continue to take human fish oil supplements? I doubt there is any difference…

Yes, your dog can continue to take human fish oil supplements. They are very healthy for dogs, they help with joints, just like with humans. We recommend this a lot. We usually suggest to dose for a human, and follow the bottle, so your dosage sounds just fine. This is something that your dog can be on forever and it will prolong any arthritis or other joint issues.

What are they good for in the body if I take the pills?

Great for cardio, skin care, lubricates the joints, gives great shiny hair, good for the mind helps think more clearly. Best taken in food form of fish, nuts, and fruits. Limit your intake on the vitamin E, best taken in the form of a multivitamin and limit yourself on the fish as it could contain amounts of mercury. Other than that the food you eat has plenty of these supplement in it as it is.
